The GUAVA Member Highlights series officially launched on Friday, October 17, 2025, from 8:30–10:15 p.m. (ET) via Zoom. We were thrilled to welcome 19 participants joining from across the United States and Vietnam.
This inaugural session spotlighted three innovative projects advancing Vietnamese language teaching and learning:
Van-Anh Tran (Tiếng Việt Ơi – Vietnamese Lessons)/ Pronunciation-Based Vietnamese Reading Booklet Project
Van-Anh introduced an ongoing self-guided pronunciation booklet project designed to support learners navigating Vietnamese tones and sounds. The resource includes culturally themed readings along with audio in Northern, Central, and Southern dialects, accessible via QR codes—filling a key gap in graded pronunciation practice materials.
Diệp Lê / Teaching Vietnamese Syllables to Adult Learners
Diệp’s session examined the structure of Vietnamese as a monosyllabic, tonal language and its contrast with English. She shared practical classroom strategies, including contrastive analysis, tone training, and syllable-building exercises, to strengthen learners’ pronunciation, listening, and communication skills.
Quang-Nhan Nguyen (Harvard University)/Vietnamese on the Menu: Culinary Workshops as Language & Culture Learning Spaces
Nhan highlighted a vibrant project integrating hands-on culinary workshops—from making “bánh mì” and Vietnamese milk coffee “cà phê sữa đá” to preparing a traditional home meal “bữa cơm nhà”—to promote culturally grounded language practice. The workshops create meaningful community connections and expand learning beyond the classroom.
